Drinking Patterns at Clubs: Using Oral Assays and Portal Methodology
Principal Investigator: Brenda A. Miller, Ph.D.

This study uses oral assays, an innovative technique, to assess drinking patterns of young adults who go to clubs. The club setting attracts young adults who are working and not in college as well as those who attend college (approximately one-third of attendees are in college). Measuring drinking patterns in this high-risk setting gives us insight into the behavior of young adults. Groups of patrons are randomly sampled as they approach the club. Data is collected anonymously as they enter the club and later as they exit. These findings will provide insight for the development of environmental strategies to reduce alcohol use in club settings. Additionally, this study will provide us with valuable data about group behaviors that will serve as a basis for developing a brief prevention strategy for groups attending clubs.
