Developing a Workplace Program to Reduce Alcohol Abuse and Risky Sex in Alaska
Principal Investigator: Joel W. Grube, Ph.D.

This study is working with companies that employ low-wage service workers in Alaska and with the employees of those companies. The goal is to develop better understand existing patterns of alcohol use/abuse, risky sexual behavior, sexually transmitted infections (including HIV) and how the workplace environment and culture affects these behaviors. We are examining what policies and programs already exist in workplaces of these low-wage Alaska service workers that might help prevent alcohol problems and sexually transmitted infections. We are also surveying employees regarding their use of alcohol, risky sexual behavior, sexually transmitted infections (including HIV) and unintended pregnancy. Our goal is to develop a workplace-linked prevention program to reduce alcohol use/abuse, risky sex, and sexually transmitted infections among these service workers in Alaska.
